This tour allows you to experience Lapland nature at its best with two local activities combined – snowshoeing through the forests and ice fishing on an immense frozen lake.
After being picked up and given proper winter clothing/boots (it can be as cold as -30°C in Lapland!), your guide will drive you around 20 km away from Rovaniemi to find the perfect peaceful place to start your trip. Before heading into the forests, you will be given some instructions on how to use the snowshoes. As you snowshoe through the quiet snowy landscapes, you will already feel the harmony of the Lapland nature that surrounds you.
Soon you will end up at the frozen lake – a truly magical sight. It is time to find a promising spot on the lake and try to catch your lunch! Your guide will help you drill your own hole in the ice and will teach you the basic techniques of how to ice fish. Then, it is just a matter of time and patience before we hopefully feel the first bites of the fish.
While you are fishing, the guide will prepare a fire on the shores of the lake for you. Some typical Finnish snacks and hot drinks are served around the campfire and offer a nice opportunity for your guide to answer all your questions about life in the Arctic and Lapland. If you manage to catch a fish (of a decent size), your guide will happily prepare it, cook it straight over the fire and add it to the menu of the day! If the fish are undersized, we return them to the lake.
After this ice fishing experience, it will be time to put back on the snowshoes and head back to Rovaniemi!
On all our excursions, our groups are limited to 8 travelers maximum. It is very important for us to provide you with the best experience possible, and avoid mass tourism. This way, your guide will know you better and will be able to address all your needs and answer your questions. Also, concerning ice fishing, keeping our groups small allows our guests to fully experience the peaceful silence of Lapland nature. As we usually say – the smaller the group, the bigger the experience!
