Have you ever wondered where all those vibrant autumn colours come from? The answer lies in the leaves themselves.
During the summer, leaves contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which helps trees capture energy from sunlight. As autumn arrives, temperatures drop and the days become shorter, causing the tree to produce less chlorophyll. As the green colour gradually fades, other pigments that have been present in the leaves all along become visible.
This is what gives the autumn landscape its beautiful palette of yellows, oranges and reds. In other words, those brilliant autumn colours have been there all along – they’ve simply been hiding beneath the summer green!
And then, as winter draws near, the leaves begin to fall – a final goodbye from autumn before the landscape transforms once again.
