Different Arctic Seasons
Rovaniemi traditionally experiences four distinct seasons over the course of the year. However, many locals would say that the year is better described by up to eight seasons, each with its own unique characteristics: midwinter, snowy spring, spring, summer, harvest season, autumn colours, first snowfall, and Christmas.
Keep in mind that the weather varies from year to year, so these seasonal descriptions should be considered general guidelines rather than fixed dates.
Weather and Climate
Lapland lies within the continental climate zone. Winters are cold and snowy, while the warming influence of the Gulf Stream makes the summers pleasantly mild.
Although Rovaniemi is located on the Arctic Circle, its climate is classified as subarctic. It is characterised by strong seasonal contrasts, with long, dark winters and bright summer nights, as well as significant differences between cold winters and warm summers.
When Do We Have Snow?
“Is there snow?” is one of the most common questions we receive, especially in early winter.
In Rovaniemi, snow typically begins to fall in November, although the first snowfall can arrive as early as October or as late as December. The snowy months transform the landscape into a true winter wonderland, creating ideal conditions for a wide range of winter activities.
Snow cover usually lasts until April, with the last traces melting away in May.
