La leggenda dell'Aurora: “il fuoco della volpe”

Secondo il folclore dei Sami le aurore sono causate da una volpe che corre sulle alture della Lapponia e che frusta la neve con la sua coda facendola sollevare e lanciando scintille verso il cielo settentrionale. Le scintille formano un arco di fuoco, dai diversi colori, che illumina il paesaggio buio. Il nome finnico dell’aurora boreale, “revontulet”, vale a dire “fuoco della volpe”, deriva proprio da questo mito.

Quello che dice la scienza

In termini scientifici le aurore boreali sono causate da particelle elettricamente cariche provenienti dal sole che collidono fra loro all’ingresso nell’atmosfera terrestre, il che risulta nell’emissione di diversi colori della luce. Il verde è di gran lunga il più comune, ma a volta è possibile vedere il rosso, il rosa, il violetto, il giallo e perfino il blu.
