A New Musical Play About Juice Leskinen’s Life on Tour Across Finland in October!
Juice Leskinen (1950–2006) was a master of Finnish music and lyrics, whose work left a lasting impact on the country’s culture. In honor of Juice’s 75th anniversary year, Heikki Vihinen has written a new musical play, Musta aurinko nousee (The Black Sun Rises), about the life of the legendary artist, known for his verbal brilliance. This moving piece dives into Juice’s final moments and memories, where his most famous songs, deep life wisdom, and distinctive humor and irony come to life. The musical play will embark on a celebratory tour to fifteen cities across Finland.
Juice, tired of dialysis treatments, decides to say goodbye to both the treatments and life itself. Surrounded by concerned loved ones, he dives into the depths of his memories: adventures, songs of joy and sorrow, and the currents of life that made him one of Finland’s most beloved artists. Musta aurinko nousee is a bold journey into the art of being an artist – all while never forgetting his dark humor and irony.
The performance focuses on Juice’s final moments and memories. Otto Kanerva, known for his numerous theater roles, shines in the role of Juice. Kanerva has previously brought this Finnish legend to life over 200 times in the critically acclaimed performances Taiteilijaelämää and Lasilliset Juicea, both written by Vihinen.
“Portraying Juhani ‘Juice’ Leskinen is very important to me: I proudly wore a ‘Juice president’ college jacket when I was in high school. The lyrics of Finnish songwriters mean the most to me in music. What interests me about portraying Juice is the contrast between his sharp thinking and the relaxed nature of his being. I’ve had the opportunity to deepen my role with the help of Vihinen and Kankku, one of Juice’s best friends who toured with him,” says Otto Kanerva.
In addition to Kanerva, Juice’s hits will be interpreted by Annika Eklund, known for her powerful voice and versatile interpretation skills, and Anna Hanski, whose warm tone and stage charisma add depth to the performance of Juice’s music. The celebration orchestra is conducted by Ari ‘Kankku’ Kankaanpää, who worked closely with Leskinen for many years. As a versatile accompanist and arranger, Kankaanpää ensures that Leskinen’s music is performed on stage with ambition and vitality, honoring its original spirit.
