eSled – First electric snowmobile safari in the world now in Rovaniemi
Rovaniemi in Lapland, Finland, is the only place in the world where you can join an electric snowmobile – an eSled – safari. That’s thanks to four local engineers that have decisively developed the eSled since 2010. However, the big idea is bigger than just the eSled: sustainable ideology is woven into every part of the safari and beyond.
Silent, emssion free but powerful eSled
Aurora eMotion, the company behind the innovative and ecological snowmobile, is ready for the upcoming season 2018-2019 with brand new eSleds, that will increase the amount of company’s electric snowmobiles, used in eSled safaris, up to 20. Electric snowmobiles are a huge step for those looking for sustainable and conscious holiday activities in Rovaniemi.
“eSled is easy to use, it’s silent and emission free, but it’s as powerful than any other snowmobile”, tells Olli Haavikko, one of the company’s co-founders and a long-term snowmobile professional.
The sustainable approach outreaches the vehicle. During the safari, the disposable plates and cutlery are made of renewable and recyclable materials and the food and drinks you enjoy from them is as local as possible.
“The energy we use is mostly local water power and from other renewable sources. We avoid fossil fuel-based electricity generation in our process”, Olli Haavikko tells.
Electric snowmobile safaris take place in Lehtojärvi, about 30-minute drive from Rovaniemi city centre, in beautiful and remote-ish surroundings dominated by forests and lakes. For the best user experience, each eSled safari is designed for smaller groups of 16 persons. For kids, there’s a special covered sleigh where kids can stay warm and comfortable wrapped in between rugs. A typical safari lasts from two to three hours and you’ll ride approximately 25 kilometres (approx. 15 miles). During an eSled safari, you’ll have a break in a Finnish “Kota”, a tipi-like hut, in a forest.
After the ride, charging eSled’s battery to full takes less than 1 hour.
Technology that works in Arctic circumstances
At the beginning, Aurora eMotion’s aim wasn’t at all to establish the first electric snowmobile safari in the world. The ambitious goal was to develop electric snowmobile that works in Arctic circumstances here on the Arctic Circle, Finnish Lapland. The original plan was to sell eSleds to local safari companies in Lapland.
However, after winning – two years in a row – Clean Snowmobile Challenge (CSC) in North America, the development crew started to create the whole business concept around the eSled.
Now eSled is not only a vehicle but a whole new way to have a Pure Lapland Experience, and it has potential on international markets.
Next season in mind, Aurora eMotion has started co-operation with Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos, and Bearhill Husky, a family-owned sled dog farm in Sinettä, Rovaniemi, Lapland. Service concept named Pure Lapland Experience provides local, sustainable and ecological services to conscious travellers. You can book your eSled tour from here.
