During the summer and autumn, we hike in small groups with our Siberian huskies to a nearby reindeer corral in our boreal forest. We'll have time to explore the corral and learn more about this reindeer herding system. If the weather is suitable and the temperature is ok, we hike approximately 6,5 km in the mornings or 15 km in the evenings.
After initial instructions we each get one dog, which is attached to a hiking belt secured around our waist. The dogs are selected according to the participants wishes: we have some older, more gentle dogs which are happy to just stroll along, and some very strong younger dogs which need sporty people who are ok to run for a while. And then there's all those in between – with over 80 dogs to chose from there's one to suit almost any fit adult! We then set off on our hike and follow our guide on routes through the forest and over the hills, which vary depending on the individual needs of the group. For the most part, it will feel like the huskies are taking us on a power walk! On our return, we finish with a kennel tour to learn about their care and training.
- Hiking equipment (dog, harness and belt)
- A kennel tour at the end of the hike
Please bring your own comfortable hiking shoes/boots, or trainers, and please be aware that there might be wet or muddy patches in the forest. Please dress according to the weather and bring extra clothes if the forecast predicts changes. Please also remember to bring your own mosquito repellant, snacks, water bottle and a small backpack for your things.
The best way to reach us is by car, but there is also a limited public bus service that runs a few times a day from Rovaniemi and Sodankylä. Please search for buses to Tiainen, then once you're on the bus, ask to be dropped off at Korvala. Please let us know your expected time of arrival.
The maximum number of participants per hike is four. The recommended minimum age and/or weight for this activity is 15 years/45 kg.
Because Siberian huskies are an arctic breed, they are best suited to cooler temperatures. They usually pull with maximum effort, so when the weather is too warm they risk overheating. Therefore we have a temperature limit of +15°C for our hikes. If temperatures go above this, the hike will be rescheduled or cancelled.
