Sat-Sun 24.-25.2. PoroCup 2018 – Reindeer race. Mäntyvaara
Porocup is a traditional, reindeer racing competition. The competition takes place in Mäntyvaara (appr. 8 kilometers from the Rovaniemi city center) in a horse racing course, which also serves for this event. The course is the length of one kilometer and is a round shape. Porocup consists of five partial races and the final race, which ends the cup to a winning reindeer (reindeer that gets the most cup-points). Only the top 24 reindeer with highest points will be able to compete for the victory. The partial races are held by local organizations and clubs and the profits are going to charity.
Reindeer is a half-wild animal, and the ones in the competition are not trained as much as the ones used in Safaris for example. Too much training would change the original nature of the reindeer, which is needed in the race to run fast and compete against each other.
How to get there: By car or by taxi. The price of taxi would be around 20-25 euros, depending on the number of people.
Food & drinks: At the event you will be able to buy some light snacks and warm drinks either from the café inside the building or from the stalls which are managed by local entepreneurs.
