Frequently asked questions about Winter Safaris

How can I book safaris?

Bookings can be done in advance from the safari companies. Especially during the busy Christmas and New Year time making advance reservations would guarantee the availability of the desired programme.

It is also possible to book winter safaris when arriving to Rovaniemi. You can just come to Rovaniemi Tourist Information and you'll find out about all the safaris available at that time.

For the most of the winter safaris the minimum is 2 full paying customers, but you can always come to Rovaniemi Tourist Information or contact directly the company of the desired safari and we'll try to find you a group which you could join.

When winter safaris start to operate?

Winter safaris start to operate in the beginning of December and you can take part in a winter safari until the middle of April (Weather permitting and if not otherwise informed).

What should I wear ?

To be able to enjoy winter activities warm clothes are necessary. You should have warm, breathable layers of clothing (for example thermal and fleece) and thick outdoor clothing. It is important to have proper shoes with warm lining and thick soles. Also don't forget to have warm gloves, woollen socks and warm headwear! For cold weather it is also good to cover your face, for example with a commando mask or with a scarf.

Many safari companies also provide equipments for their safaris (snowmobile overalls, socks, footwear, gloves, scarf and headwear). You can also rent equipments from some of the safari companies.

When can I see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)?

Northern Lights can be seen on dark nights if the weather is suitable; cold and clear skies. It is, however, an unpredictable phenomenon. The Northern Lights season is from October until March.
In Rovaniemi there are many safari companies who are organising various Northern Lights safaris.
